Search the DUMC Archive for Physician Assistant

The DUMC Archival finding aids allows you access to documents and materials pertaining to physician assistants. This material is distributed in over 30 collections, the Physician Assistant Program being the largest. Key words to be used in your search are: physician’s assistant or physician’s associate with or without the apostrophe. You may also use the acronyms PA, AAPA, APAP and NCCPA to find material. As a combined collection, the Cultural History of the Physician Assistant (PA) Profession Collection is one of the largest digital and original collections of material related to the development of the health team approach to the delivery of medical and preventive health care services in the USA. This special collection is an outgrowth of the PA History Office established at the Duke University Medical Center in 2001 as a collaborative effort of the Department of Community and Family Medicine and the DUMC Library and DUMC Archives. The Society for the Preservation of PA History along with its collaborating organizations and sponsors oversee, promote, and provide financial support necessary to develop and expand the use of the collection. This collaborative project is supported with federal LSTA funds made possible through a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, administered by the State Library of North Carolina, a division of the Department of Cultural Resources.

Search the Digital Archive Collection

PA History Digital Collection contains over 3,000 images selected from materials contained in the DUMC Archival and PA History Society's special collections. New images are added as items are selected and processed. Supported by a grant from the Josiah Charles Trent Memorial Foundation, Inc., a search engine has been added to the PA History Center Website to allow users to search our online repositories of digital images of articles, reports, photographs, biographies, artifact and other memorabilia associated with the history of the physician assistant profession. Developed and maintained by the Society for the Preservation of PA History and the DUMC Archives, the digital archival collection is intended to be used only for academic, research and literary purposes. Please read the Terms of Use prior to accessing the collection.

Each item in our Digital Collection has a unique identity number with accompanying metadata providing details about the item including standard, searchable database fields (title, subject, date, contributor, etc.). We want our users to have a genuine and authentic experience when viewing the online collection. We recognize that looking at material online is not the same as holding the original in your hands, but it helps protect, provide easy retrieval and repeated use of items without damage - one of our goals for digitizing the collection. Some items may be missing metadata information. If you have knowledge of any missing information, please let us know so that we can provide the most accurate and abundant information possible.
